Our Edberts House story began in 2008 with a small group of local people in East Gateshead who wanted to see change on their estate. We started activities in a house in the heart of the estate, which became known as Edberts House. When we began, our estate had the highest levels of anti-social behaviour in the Borough and lots of empty properties. Six years later, through building trust and connection between local residents, it had fallen to below average and every house was full. From this small beginning, we have now developed three more community hubs in Gateshead, serving thousands of people every year.
Our local GP surgeries were impressed by the impact of our community development work on their patients: they reported that they were more articulate in their appointments and came to the GP less frequently. As a result, in 2014 we developed our Community Linking Project, which has received national recognition and was influential in the roll out of social prescribing as a mainstream NHS Primary Care offer in 2019. Together with Primary Care, we combine the best of clinical and community expertise to meet the needs of people and link them to services best able to support them. The project now employs and supports a team of social prescribing workers across the whole borough of Gateshead. We were described by the NHS England lead for social prescribing as demonstrating national leadership through our work, which was also cited as an example of good practice in the Marmot 2020 review.
Across all of our work, we acknowledge the unacceptable levels of health inequalities across Gateshead, and we are committed to tackling these. Our Health Equity Team was established in 2022 and is in the process of setting up new projects to help meet the growing need for community connection, as well as the basic requirements for helping people in Gateshead cope with their considerable health and wellbeing challenges.
We know no one organisation by itself can help local people to make all the changes they identify as important to their lives and to their community. Therefore, we work proactively with an extensive range of statutory, voluntary and community partners to build happier, healthier, friendlier communities.
